Laptop Open, Coffee Down: Finding a Place to Work or Study in Nottingham

There is a very specific kind of Nottingham afternoon when you need somewhere to go, but you don’t particularly want to go home.

You’ve got an hour before the next thing. The laptop is in your bag. Your phone battery is somehow already struggling. You could wander around the city pretending to have somewhere to be.

Or you could find a table and get a coffee.

That was part of the thinking behind AM Coffee & Bakery on Alfreton Road.

Not everybody comes to a café for the same reason, and sometimes the most useful thing a coffee shop can offer is simply a comfortable place to stay for a while.

First job: find your table

The Nottingham café has plenty of seating spread across two levels.

There are smaller tables if you’re on your own, seating by the windows, larger tables for groups and enough variety that a quick coffee doesn’t have to feel the same as a two-hour catch-up.

If you’re working or studying, that matters.

Nobody wants to balance a laptop, phone and cappuccino on a table designed for one espresso cup.

The Alfreton Road branch also has free Wi-Fi, so opening the laptop is perfectly normal here.

The first coffee is the productive one

There is something psychologically powerful about putting a fresh coffee next to a laptop.

For approximately twenty minutes, you become the sort of person who answers emails immediately and has their life completely under control.

Use this period wisely.

If you’re keeping things straightforward, there are Americanos, flat whites, cortados, cappuccinos and lattes.

If the work isn’t going particularly well, there are more interesting options.

Spanish latte. Iced blueberry matcha. Dragonfruit matcha. Blue vanilla matcha. Rainbow iced matcha.

Sometimes changing the drink doesn’t solve the work.

It does make the desk look better.

Studying on an empty stomach was never a good plan

There is normally a point where concentration gives way to looking at everybody else’s food.

At AM Nottingham, this can happen quickly.

The breakfast menu includes Eggs Benedict, Florentine and Royale, an English breakfast, smashed avocado and feta, smoked salmon on toast, mushrooms with pesto and eggs, and a Matcha Breakfast Bowl.

If you’ve arrived later, focaccia is an easy lunch decision.

There are fillings including mortadella, spicy salami, chicken with pesto, mozzarella with tomato and olives, plus other meat and vegetarian combinations.

The difficult part is pretending the pastry counter isn’t also there.

The 3pm dessert decision

This is where the Nottingham location becomes particularly dangerous.

You’ve finished the important thing.

You could close the laptop and leave.

Then you notice the desserts.

The Alfreton Road menu has a much larger sweet section, including cheesecakes, tiramisu, cannoli, brownies, cakes, éclairs and pistachio-heavy options that are particularly difficult to ignore.

There is even illyCrema if frozen espresso cream sounds like a better conclusion to the afternoon than another ordinary coffee.

At this stage, productivity has technically finished.

That’s fine.

Good meeting places don’t need much explaining

Not every laptop on the table means somebody is working alone.

Sometimes you need somewhere to meet a client, go through a project with somebody, revise together or sit opposite a friend while both of you insist you’re definitely going to get some work done.

A café works well for that because it sits somewhere between formal and casual.

No meeting room.

No reception desk.

No awkward silence while everybody waits for somebody else to speak.

Just coffee, a table and enough background noise that the whole thing feels normal.

Why Alfreton Road works for it

The location is part of the appeal.

AM sits at Centre Court on Alfreton Road, with students living directly around the building and the city centre close enough that the café naturally picks up people moving between work, university and home.

That means you don’t need a special reason to come here.

You can use it for the awkward forty-five minutes between things.

You can meet someone before heading into town.

You can stay for breakfast.

You can finish a piece of work without staring at the same four walls at home.

Or you can do absolutely none of that and just drink coffee.

Also acceptable.

The best coffee shops become useful

The places you return to aren’t always the ones reserved for special occasions.

They’re usually the ones that solve small problems.

Where can we meet?

Where can I sit for an hour?

Where can I get breakfast before work?

Where can I open the laptop without feeling like I need to leave after twenty minutes?

Where can I get coffee and something substantially better than the emergency snack in my bag?

If AM Nottingham becomes one of the answers to those questions, we’re happy with that.

And if no work gets done because somebody ordered a pistachio croissant and derailed the entire afternoon, we’re prepared to accept some responsibility.
